The Different Types of Programming Languages - Learn the Basics

The progression of computer programming languages was made possible by the programmer's search for efficient translation of human language into something that can be read and understood by computers. The languages generated, called machine code, have high levels of abstraction, which hide the computer hardware and make use of representations that are more convenient to programmers.

As programs evolve and become more sophisticated, programmers found out that certain types of computer languages are easier to support. As expected in a dynamic discipline, there is no standard for categorizing the languages used in programming. There are, in fact, dozens of categories. One of the most basic ways to categorize the languages is through a programming paradigm, which gives the programmer's view of code execution. Among the languages classifications according to programming paradigm are:

o Object-Oriented Programming Languages
Known as the newest and most powerful paradigms, object-oriented programming requires the designer to specify the data structures as well as the types of operations to be applied on those data structures. The pairing of data, and the operations that can be done on it is called an object. A program made using this language is therefore made up of a set of cooperating objects instead of an instructions list.

The most famous object-oriented programming these days are C#, C , Visual Basic, Java, and Python.

o Structured Programming Languages

An exceptional type of procedural programming, structured programming provides programmers with additional tools to handle the problems created by larger programs. When using this language, programmers are required to cut program structure into small pieces of code that can easily be understood. Instead of using global variables, it employs variables that are local to every subroutine. Among the popular features of structured programming is that it doesn't accept GOTO statement which is usually associated with the top-down approach. Such approach starts with an opening overview of the system with minimal details about the various parts. To add these details, design iterations are then included to complete the design.

Commonly used structured languages include C, Pascal, and ADA.

o Procedural Programming Languages

Procedural Programming involves a list of operations the program needs to complete to be able to attain the preferred state. It is a simple programming paradigm where every program comes with a starting phase, a list of tasks and operations, and an ending stage. Also called imperative programming, this approach comes with small sections of code that perform certain functions. These sections are made up of procedures, subroutines, or methods. A procedure is made up of a list of computations that should be done. Procedural programming lets a part of the code to be used again without the need to make several copies. It achieves this by dividing programmatic tasks into small sections. Because of this, programmers are also capable of maintaining and understanding program structure.

Among the known procedural languages are BASIC and FORTRAN.

Procedural programming splits the program's source code into smaller fragments. Structured languages require more constraints in the flow and organization of programs. And object-oriented programs arrange codes and data structures into objects.

How to Breed Mealworms, The Easy Way

You may ask why one would want to breed mealworms. There are several reasons I can think of why some might NOT be interested in breeding mealworms: They are worms! They are smelly, slimy, icky, squirmy, worms! They can get out and infest my home! Or those that have a bit of experience with these insects might suggest they can easily be purchase them from a local pet store or even cheaper in bulk off the internet.

First, let me dispel the assumptions- they are not smelly, slimy, squirmy, and I don't think they are icky. Their climbing skills are limited to non slick objects. They are slow moving so if you do drop one, you can easily capture it.

Yes, you can order mealworms from a pet store. The Internet also sells worms for as little as a thousand! So why would I want to go through the hassle of breeding them if I can purchase them so easily and inexpensive? Great question.

How to Breed Mealworms, The Easy Way

If you raise small reptiles like I do, or have very small hatchlings such as viper geckos, pictus geckos, or even chameleons, you need to raise your own mealworms! You will find that breeding mealworms provides a great range of sizes perfect for these small reptiles. Young reptiles eat often! You need to have a dependable supply of food just the right size for these young animals to allow them to grow at a healthy rate. By raising your own, you will have several sizes available for your animals.

To begin raising your own mealworms start with about 100 - 200 adult worms. Again, these can be purchased at a local pet store or even from an Internet company. A note that regular mealworms will metamorphoses to a pupa and then into the Darkling beetle.

Prepare the bedding used to keep the worms healthy by using a generic brand of oats and a dry baby cereal. The cheaper the better. I use the oats as a base for the medium. I like to add the cereal as an additional food source for the young mealworms.

Mix the two together - 2/3 oats to about 1/3 cereal. You will want to mix enough to have about an inch or two in the bottom of your container. This will become the base food of the worms. Additional foods such as potatoes, carrots, apples, kale, and other greens can be offered to provide moisture to the worms. The container can be a plastic shoebox, sweater box, or another setup I'll discuss later.

Once the oats & cereal is mixed together, add the mealworms. Add an egg carton top and bottom and you are good to go. The worms use this egg carton to crawl around on and under. Although mealworms will not climb the plastic walls, I position the cartons away from the edges of the box.

Keeping the mealworms at a constant high 70's low 80's and you will soon start seeing pupa developing. I have found with the medium mix described above and other foods offered that the worms will not bother the pupa. Some pupa may turn brown and die but most should turn into beetles. If you want to maximize the output, you can certainly separate the pupa from the worms.

After about 2 weeks of being a pupa, you will start to see a few Darkling beetles appearing under the egg cartons. Again, I have not noticed any predation in my groups, even of the softer pupa by the beetles if they are feed well. The beetles are ultimately what you are striving for in a healthy mealworm colony. They lay the eggs to create new mealworms. The eggs are quite small and it is likely you will never see them as they are sticky and will adhere to the bedding.

Eventually the container will be a mix of substrate, egg cartons, mealworms of various sizes, maybe some pupa, and certainly beetles. From this slurry of activity you can selectively harvest the size of mealworm you desire.

The above technique works well if you need to feed just a few animals. If you have more than a handful of animals, the best way to go about setting up a non-stop mealworm factory is to use one of those plastic filing system found at your local department store. Setup each bin with a culture and you will be pulling all sizes of mealworms-more than you could ever use.

In this setup, I have 6 drawers of mealworms going (the middle bin is used for vermiculite). I don't use all the worms this unit produces. I let several bins mature to produce pupa, beetles, and eventually more mini-mealworms.

I hope you try this neat way to provide your animals additional foods. Be a bit patient as it does take a little time to see those first micro mealworms.

To become a web designer in the UK you don't really need any formal qualifications by law in order to set up on your own and start designing websites for clients. This is both a blessing and a curse to professionals wishing to work in the web design industry. On one hand it makes it very easy for professionally skilled individuals to join a rewarding and potentially very lucrative industry. On the other hand the industry is given a bad name, confused and cheapened by cowboy web designers, who enter the industry without adequate qualifications, skills and experience.

First of all, to become a web designer one of the pre-requisite qualifications in the UK is to be higher educated. Studying for such qualifications allows you to develop an awareness of the industry and allows a lot of time for self learning of software skills and web design techniques, which are critical for a career as a web designer.

Skills Needed:

Some (but not all) of the skills which you will need in order to become a web designer are:

ASP / PHP

Flash

Of course the skills that you need will vary depending on the area of web design that you intend to pursue. Graphically oriented web designers will need strong graphic design skills such as adobe photoshop, fireworks and flash. Web Designer that are more coding oriented will need a strong command of the following skills: HTML, CSS, SQL and ASP or PHP. The latter are usually referred to as web developers rather than web designers.

Getting All Important Web Design Experience:

The time taken to achieve competence in web design technologies in my opinion is 3 years this can be coupled with the time it takes to study for a degree at a UK university. Of course formal qualifications are only a small piece of the puzzle. It is the experience gained from your first web design job that you will find most valuable.

From my own experience, I learned more from my first 6 months working in the web design industry than I did during my 3 years at university. There really is no substitute for the experience of working with a professional web design company and being able to ask experienced web designers for help and advice.

Developing A Specialism:

Over time it is definitely worth developing a web design specialism. For me it was the development of search engine optimised website. It was that particular area of web design that took my interest and the area in which I have excelled as a website designer. Becoming a specialist in a particular area will really raise your stock and will allow you to become and expert in your own particular niche.
